Thank A Farmer Day!

October 12 is celebrated as National Farmer’s Day, and there are records of this celebration going back to the 1800s. The farming culture can be traced back to 10,000 BC and farmers have been sustaining the world’s population ever since.

Today the average American Farmer feeds 155 people annually - which is six times as many than 1960. It is anticipated that world population will rise from 7 billion to 9 billion by 2050, and will require farmers to grow approximately 70% more food than what they are currently producing, using the same amount of land and water. While 2.1 million working farms exist in the United States, the families who own and operate them make up only 2% of the population.

From 20 hour days, sunrise to sunset, working in all elements, planning and praying for strong, healthy crops, farmers choose the most difficult and least appreciated lifestyle. So, take the time today to thank a farmer – because there has never been a day of your life you haven't needed one.
